Walks Programme




14 April.

Meeting Point OS 115. ST 180 067. A 1.30pm start for a 5 mile walk. With tracks, some narrow roads through Luppitt, lanes and footpaths and grand views over the Devon countryside, (weather permitting,) Although planning to cross Hensemoor it may be prudent on the day to use a detour to avoid some of the boggier sections found on the recce.  Car share advisable as the parking area will only take about 5 cars.


28 April.

Bluebell Walk. Meet at the Village Hall car park, Churchingford, at 1.30pm. OS map 128, Grid ref ST213 126. Parking is limited, but if you are eating at the York Inn pub you could park outside the pub. Sunday lunch is available and booking is essential (01823-601333). The walk will include Otterford and Yarty Valley.  It is 7 miles long and includes lanes, fields, and (hopefully) Bluebells. Could be muddy after rain. 


12 May.

Meet for a 1.30 pm start at Blackborough ST 094 092 for an undulating and varied 6.70 mile walk taking in Downlands Plantation, Blackborough Common and Rhododendron Wood . Could be muddy after rain. Parking difficult so car share advisable: meet at Sowton Park and Ride at 12.30 pm. or arrange yourself.


26 May.

Approx. 7.5 Miles. Meet at Broadsands (pay and display) car park for a 1.00 pm start. OS map OL20 SX 897 574. Car share from Exmouth and also Sowton Park and Ride. Some food is available at the beach but packed lunch recommended if required.

Marvellous sea and river views.


9 June.

1.30pm meet at Two Bridges one mile east of Princetown map ref. SX 607 750. Car-parking in lay-by on road or Hotel opposite). Possible car-share from Exeter, Sidmouth Road Park and Ride.(Make your own arrangements) Suggested leaving time 12.30pm.

5½ miles along the West Dart River to the famous Wistman’s Wood National Nature Reserve, and then returning on open moor via Longaford Tor (507m) and Littaford Tor (466m) with fine views.


12 June.

Evening Jurassic Coast Cruise. Sail the stunning coastline and scenery of England's only natural World Heritage site. View the setting sun over the mouth of the River Exe on the return journey. Full commentary. Bar and toilets on board. Boat leaves Exmouth at 7pm (advised to get there at least 15 minutes beforehand) and cruise lasts about 2.5 hours. Tickets cost £8 and can be booked on 01395 279693 or at www.jurassiccoastcruises.co.uk. Please let Debbie or Brian know by the evening before that you are coming.


19 June.

7pm meet at Otterton (outside The Kings Arms). High Peak has been shorn of its tree covering, so the views all around will be wonderful (weather permitting). 3 miles including the cliff path down to Ladram, where refreshments can be taken (ditto The Kings Arms).


23 June.

Meet at Stockland Village Hall car park, OS GR ST246045, at 1.30pm for a roughly 6.5 mile walk exploring the countryside around Stockland.  The area is hilly, and prone to being muddy in wet weather, so stout boots and poles advisable, but the views are splendid.  There is ample parking at the village hall.


3 July.

7pm meet at the cliff car-park at Beer. Over to Branscombe via the look-out, and back via the under-cliff and Beer Head. 3 miles. Refreshments can be taken in a number of hostelries in Beer.


7 July.

BBQ TIME - Meet at Tomi’s at 1.30 p.m. to leave food. 

A walk in the area followed by a social afternoon/evening. Meet 4 – 4.30 p.m. if you do not wish to walk but would like to join us for the BBQ. Please bring meat/veggie for the BBQ and something to share + whatever you would like to drink. 


17 July.

A 7.00 pm start in Topsham from The Lighter Inn on the Quay. The walk will only be  an hour and a half at the most and will be a short walk around the village. Then a drink can be enjoyed at The Passage House Inn.


21 July.

A 1.30pm start for a 5 mile walk exploring Bovey Valley. Steep in places, rough paths and woodland, wide ranging views.  Meet in layby by side of lane at Hammerslake (OS outdoor leisure 28 SX 774815) parking limited so car share advised.


4 August.


Start 1.30 p.m. from Kenton C.P.  5/6 mile walk in Kenton/Mamhead area.  Lanes, tracks, rural and estuary views.  Could be muddy in places.  Optional tea at Powderham.


18 August.

Park at Smeatharpe Village Hall at 1.30pm. (OS ref ST 20046 – 10915 ) for a 6 mile walk around the Blackdowns countryside near Smeatharpe, passing through Gotleigh Moor and possibly Southey Moor.   To car share, meet on the disused stretch of road on the West Hill side of the Daisymount junction on the A30 at 12.30pm. Smeatharpe is north of Honiton and west of the A30.  


1 September.

Meet at 1.30pm at Wootton Courtney off the A396 to Dunster. Free parking near the telephone box in the centre of the village. An Undulating 8.5 mile circular walk over Wootton Common and Hopcott Common, with fine views of the Bristol Channel and South Wales, weather permitting. An opportunity for refreshments at Dunster halfway round. Car share: meet at 11.30 am at the car park next to Sowton Park and Ride.


15 September.


Start 1.30 from Langdon Hill car park. Grid Ref. OS Sheet 193 SY413 931. 6 Miles. Hilly and uneven walk along this wonderful stretch of the coast path with fantastic views to the west, Golden Cap, eastwards towards Burton Bradstock etc.

We could arrange to meet at the lay-by at Daisymount off the B3180 at 12.45 if that suits everybody.


29 September.

Meet  on the road that crosses between the Kennick amd Tottiford reservoirs where parking is available on the roadside. SX 80612 83821 for a 5 mile walk through pine forests and varied landscape. Mostly on good level pathways taking in parts of the Tottiford and Trenchford reservoirs. Anyone wanting to car share should meet on the Ide roundabout (off theA30) at 12.45. 








Members are encouraged to lead a walk or to organise a social event

Walks will start PROMPTLY at 1.30pm unless otherwise stated.

Please allow plenty of time if you wish to eat at the pub before the walk.

Car share is always an option

Please ring the leader(s) to arrange Please let Leaders know if you are joining the walk/event.  If a walk/event has to be cancelled or amended, we can then let you know.



·         Check the various dates and start times for all walks and arrive 15 minutes before a walk is due to commence.  It is important that we leave on time especially on walks where we meet to share transport and walks when we need to arrive back at the cars before dark!   If in doubt about any of the walks please telephone the walk leader beforehand.

·         This is a non-profit making club and we hope that everyone will help make future programmes varied and interesting by putting on either a walk or social/pub event.

·         Subscriptions cost £5 for a year, or £3 per 6 month programme anytime during the year if joining the group later.  If you would like to join us either on the walks or at social events, please pay Jean.  We regret we are unable to accept cheques.
