Autumn 2011 Programme

4 September

Meet at 1.30pm for a walk from Drewsteignton to FingleBridge. Circular 5.6mls, Duration 2.5hrs. Difficulty - Medium. Starting point  SX735908 GPS ref. 73582 90847 (start opposite the Post office).  Optional cream tea at FingleBridge.

Car share:  Meet at SowtonPark and Ride 1pm.

Sunday     11 September

Meet at Torcross (if you wish to travel direct). There is unrestricted parking for a few cars in Dockey Lane, first right immediately after Torcross Chapel. After a picnic lunch on the beach we will set off on an 8 mile walk through the villages of Stokenham and Chillington, returning along Beesands and the South West Coast Path for a well-earned ice cream at Torcross. Steep in parts and could be muddy after rain.

Car Share: Meet at 11 a.m. at the car park next to SowtonPark and Ride.  Contact the leaders to let them know if you will be joining them for car share and picnic or turning up for walk only.

Sunday     18 September

Meet at 1.30pm at Coldharbour Mill, Uffculme.   Park on road near to Mill car park.  Start from Mill car park gates for a level 6.5 mile walk along the valley of the River Culm to Culmstock and return.

No walk has been arranged for this weekend.


2 October

Recce Walk. Meet at 1pm by Dawlish Museum for a circular walk of 5 ¼ miles. (Grid Ref 958768).  Walk along Dawlish Water, lanes and sea wall.  (Book: Walks with a Point Literary Walk 3, P 27 – Jane Austen and Dickens at Dawlish).

Car Share: Meet at Sowton P&R 12.15pm.


9 October

Meet at 1pm for a circular walk starting at the Olive Tree cafe/bistro in Bude (opposite the Falcon Hotel on the canal bank) walking along the coast to Widemouth before turning inland and back into Bude along the canal.  Approximately 5 - 6 miles of dry walking with a couple of shortish climbs, and opportunities for tea and cake at the start/end and 3/4 of the way around!  If you fancy taking a picnic lunch the beach or cliffs would be an option.  Car share: Ring the leader to arrange car share – leaving around 11.30am.


16 October


Meet at 1.30 p.m. at the free Victory Hall car park, Broadclyst, for a 7 mile walk  along lanes and  footpaths through the villages of Poltimore, Ratsloe and Columbjohn, returning through Columbjohn Wood and the Killerton estate.


23 October

Meet by the pub at 12.45pm for a walk starting at Symondsbury (just west of Bridport).  Countryside and cliffs - Hell Lane, Doghouse Hill and Eype (where refreshments may be had) 3/4 of the way around.  7 miles.

Car share:  Meet  at Sidford Car Park at 12pm.


30 October

Meet at 1.30pm near Morchard Road station for an interesting 6 mile walk via Tuckingmill Bridge and Down St Mary.  Parking in free car park on left side of A377 opposite the Devonshire Dumpling pub.

6 November

No walk arranged for this weekend.


13 November

Meet at 1.30pm in Lapford Village.  This is a relatively short walk (only 4.5 miles), through unspoilt undulating coutryside, and suitable for a short winter’s afternoon.  Hills mostly fairly gentle.  Drive up into the centre of Lapford village from the A377, and park in the free public car park on the left just uphill from the pub (The Old Malt Scoop).

Car share: Meet at Sowton at 12.30pm to drive to Lapford. 


20 November

Meet at 1.30 p.m. at Stoke Hill car park Grid Ref 924957 for a 6 mile walk along footpaths and quiet country lanes via Upton Pyne and Brampford Speke. Could be muddy after rain.


27 November

Meet at the centre of Moretonhampstead for a 1.00pm start. Passing the Giants Grave and Headless Cross on Mardon Down (good views south over the moors) and back via Doccombe. No more than 6 miles... Refreshments available at the beginning and end. Nothing in the middle.


4 December

Meet at 1.30pm at Watcombe car park(just to the east of Torquay) situated off the B3199 Torquay to Teignmouth road.  Parking free. Exploring the  Coast and Countryside of Watcombe and Maidencombe 4 mile figure of eight route, quite challenging in parts, through valley of rocks, along coastal footpath and countryside with views over Babbacombe Bay and Lyme Bay.  The Thatched Inn in Maidencombe is worth a visit part way round or other hostelries not far away at end of walk!

Car share: at Sowton Park and Ride at 12.30p.m


11 December

Annual Christmas Mince Pie walk.

Meet at The London Hotel, Ottery St Mary for a walk in area starting at 1.30pm.  Back to Tomi’s for Mince Pies/Cake and tea. 

Come whatever the weather for a festive get-together –

friends and family welcome.


18 December

Week before Christmas.  No walk arranged for this date as yet.
